I’ll also add at this point that if your playing a CD release like me from the Ultima collection (or ANY PC CD release) you MUST run at least the map fix patch or the game is unwinable and broken. Overall the EGA palette and tiles don’t change the game other then not making my eyes bleed. The biggest reason though that personally justified it for me is that the first game Ultima I did not receive a PC port until 1987 and that port was in EGA so it just felt odd with a sequel that was drastically graphically inferior.

Second there is actually a color composite mode when running Ultima II on a composite monitor or TV that kinda sorta looks like EGA or mostly like the Apple II origional, or at least much better then CGA so the EGA palette isn’t to far off. first off the CGA palette in Ultima II (and III) is painful to view. There’s a number of reason I went with the EGA patch. The EGA patch also is not an official patch but a fan patch and usually I stay away from those kind of things (for the most part). The game was not released this way and the original PC version was CGA. Alright before I get into that I’ll talk about the version I chose to play and then the plot.Īs you can tell from the title screen above I am playing the PC version of Ultima II with the EGA patch. System played on: 8mhz NEC V30, 640kb RAM, Trident 8900D, DOS 6.22Īh, Ultima II: Revenge of the Enchantress, what a not fun game and horrible slog and this despite the fact it dons one of my all time favorite old PC pieces of cover art. After you have entered all four cards in the correct order, you must make your way back out of the castle with the Ankh to finish the game. The deceptively cool looking box cover and title screen

Only in the NES version is there an extra step to reach the ending. Use the "Pray" command to insert the four Cards in Exodus, following the order that you learned from the Time Lord in the Cave of Moon. Continue to the left, then turn northwards at the first fork to reach Exodus. Hug the left wall until you pass a blue force field. Follow this link for a map of the Nintendo version.Īt the first hall, take the exit on the right, then follow the "white" corridor northwards. In the NES version, Exodus Castle was drastically modified. Pray in the nearby Circle of Light to obtain the Silver Horn. found in the Cave of Moon with that, go to Yew and walk across the lava pits to access the Temple in the Temple, you'll learn the "Pray" command. To obtain the Silver Horn you must first get the Mark of Fire, e.g. The Mark of Snake is found in the Cave of Sol. You need the Mark of Snake and the Silver Horn to access the Castle ( the Silver Horn replaces the Yell command and the word Evocare). nsert Love, move right, nsert Sol, move right, nsert Moons, right again and nsert Death. Move below, to the left of the machine that is Exodus. Watch which of your guys is getting hit: he's the one nearest your foe. Each Floor panel will only take one hit to kill when you find them. To get the rest, line your men up abreast and march up the room, attacking forward and to the sides. Use your Wizard's "P" spell or your Cleric's "O" spell. In the upper central part you'll hit three sets of invisible enemies (Floors), each of whom hit pretty hard.

Go as far to the west (or east) as you can, walking through the Fire and Force Fields. As you go along you'll have several fairly tough battles. It would be wise to make a backup copy of the Roster file before entering the castle, as things can get rough in there. Note that you can't use powder to negate time in Exodus Castle.
